Escape the Gold Rush
Want an idea of what we do? Here’s a look at our most recent room: designed, built, and run by the Shipwreck Entertainment crew from start to finish. In partnership with the Sacramento History Museum, the “Escape the Sacramento Gold Rush” adventure ran a four-week limited engagement in Old Sacramento. This joint venture acted as a fundraiser to support the museum’s important work bringing history to life for school children and adults.
Escape the Gold Rush was an early west themed room with historical content salted through the experience. You find yourself in the the 1850’s with gambling, wanted posters, telegraph keys, and more throughout the room….or is there two rooms? And how do you get back to your current time. I love the “ah-ha” moments so several are designed into the room. We played this with the game master as a costumed character in the room and various costume items for the players to enjoy.

The adventure was set in a 1850s Gold Rush era hotel saloon and gambling parlor, packed with mind-bending twists and turns. Successful adventurers had to be sure to keep a weather eye out. As any Sacramentian will tell you, little is what it seems among the scalawags and soiled doves. Teams found themselves at the height of the Gold Rush with disaster about to strike! They had a one-hour time limit to solve the puzzles or be doomed to repeat the past!
Although these games were captivating and tantalizing, the “Escape the Sacramento Gold Rush” experiences were also family-friendly.
Each experience accommodated a range of two to ten players and lasted up to one hour (depending on how long it took the group to solve the various riddles). “Escape the Sacramento Gold Rush” had an escape rate of 45% with over 50 teams giving it their best.
Did you “Escape the Sacramento Gold Rush” just in time? Or did you end up so close?
“Don’t let this room fool you. Gold Rush escape room appears to be seem fairly simple at first glance but quickly builds into a very complex and entraining challenge. This room was full of great puzzles, hidden surprises and amazing use of technology. Our group had a great time and there were enough puzzles that I could do this escape several times before I had worked on them all. Highly recommend to any fan of escape rooms or local history. The moment one enters the Gold Rush escape room it takes you back to a time where things seems simpler. However the puzzles and clues hidden throughout were anything but. With a bit of team work and thinking outside of the box, what appears like unconnected pieces eventually linked and the thrill of getting closer to grand finish was to be had. Overall the Gold Rush escape room was well designed, captivating and thought provoking.”
“Our office decided to go to the Escape the Gold Rush as a team building exercise. Only one of the eight of us had ever done an escape room before, and a few had never even heard of them. We started off slow, but as the puzzles began to reveal their meanings and the locks began to open everyone really started getting into the game and the communication and team work increased. The puzzles were not all difficult, but some really had us thinking and, admittedly, guessing. We really enjoyed the Gold Rush theme, perfect for Old Sacramento. Thank you to the Sacramento Museum for bringing this type of amusement to Old Sac and to the game masters for creating a great team experience, a great first- time escape room experience and a challenging, but rewarding hour. Did we make it out??? Try it and you decide.”
“This was our first escape room experience. Ours was a fairly unique experience in that we didn’t have anyone but our own party of 3 novices. We had a lot of fun. The puzzles were interesting, and with the help of our friendly hosts, we were able to move along fairly well. I loved the old world theme and immersive experience. It fits in well with the Old Sacramento feel. I definitely would recommend this to anyone wanting to try an escape room!”
“Thank you for hosting our group last Friday. Everyone enjoyed it and we were all impressed by your creativity and skill. You are to be congratulated for conceiving and executing such a clever experience. Attendees are sure to spread the word. Property owners Dave and Steve Scurfield and Old Sacramento Executive Director Brooksie Hughes with Scott Ford should be helpful as well. Thanks and congrats also to your wife.”
“We used the Gold Rush Escape room as a team building exercise. The room was set up beautifully allowing us to have a great team experience and learn a little about history too. The variety of puzzles and tasks gave everyone on our team with different skills an opportunity to shine. Many members had not experienced an escape room before but everyone walked away from this discussing the next opportunity to escape! This is definitely a great addition to the experiences of Old Sacramento.”
